I am sorry to hear of your HD crash. we have many of them (we have thousands of drives). the best solution seems to be to have another copy on another HD. fortunately, hard drives are getting cheaper.

we have not found any other real answers. on linux, there are some who say rieser is better on disks than ext2/3 because it spreads the directory info over the drive. fyi.
